The Bothin Foundation was established by Henry E. Bothin, his wife, Ellen Chabot Bothin, and daughter, Genevieve Bothin de Limur, and incorporated as a private foundation in the State of California on September 28, 1917.

The broad purpose of the Foundation is to support public charities located in the four counties of San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma, and San Mateo.

The Bothin Foundation supports organizations providing direct services to low-income, at-risk children, youth and families, the elderly and disabled. To a limited extent, grants may also be made to environmental agencies, arts organizations which serve youth predominately, and community-based capital campaigns.

The Foundation prefers to make grants for capital, building, and equipment needs. In order to be considered for a vehicle grant, all requests must include a completed Vehicle Grant Application Questionnaire. The Board prefers that a full three years elapse between grants to an organization.

Grants are not made to individuals, endowment drives, events, general operating expenses, annual appeals, videos, medical research, scholarships, religious organizations, or educational institutions other than those which serve the learning disabled.

Grants: 1) New American Media/Pacific News Service, 2007: $23,000″
