Create Your Twitter Account
Here’s how to sign up for your free Twitter account:
![]() |
| To create your Twitter account, click the big green button. |
1. Go to: http://twitter.com. If you don’t already have a Twitter account, you’ll see the welcome screen (see image). Click the big green “Get started - Join!” button.
2. On the “Create Account” page, first choose your username (what people will call you on Twitter). Tip: Keep your username as short as possible! In this medium, characters count! The form will let you know when you’ve chosen a username that’s available. Then choose a password you’ll remember, and enter your e-mail address (must be valid). Then, prove you’re a real person by doing Twitter’s “humanness” test, and click “I accept.”

| When you create your account, Twitter will immediately tell you whether your preferred username is available.] |
Congratulations! You now have a Twitter account.
Next, Twitter will ask you if you want to check whether any of your e-mail contacts use Twitter. This is one way to find people you know on Twitter, but this step is optional. I recommend that you just skip it for now. You can return to it later if you want.

Comments
Thanks for such a helpful article. I’m a strong believer in Twitter for journalists and just for plain fun. We use Twitter to find sources, details and share information with the many “tweeple” in the Raleigh-Durham area. Unfortunately, I think a lot of people who don’t understand/use Twitter see it solely as a way to “stalk” people. It takes a while to really grasp it. And I find that it becomes a lot easier to manage if you use a third-party application to monitor your Twitter account. Personally, I’ve found that the Adobe Air Applicaiton “Twhirl” is the easiest to manage. Follow me on Twitter at @GinnySkal
